EMMET CO. -- The Petoskey Batman is in trouble with the law once again, after he showed up at a crime scene in Emmet County.
Michigan State Police arrested Mark Williams, 33, of Petoskey, late Saturday night. Sgt. Jeff Gorno tells 7&4 News, Williams showed up while police were trying to find an injured person after a car crash in Bear Creek Township.
Sgt. Gorno says Williams was dressed in full costume when he approached police and said he wanted to help in the search efforts. Police told Williams to leave and arrested him a short time later. Police say he was getting in the way of investigators and a K-9 search.
The Petoskey Batman was taken to jail and was charged with resisting and obstructing police in an investigation. The charge is a felony, which could mean Batman spending up to two years behind bars if found guilty of the crime. He will be back in court on Oct. 18.
The Petoskey crime fighter first made headlines last year when he was found hanging off a downtown building dressed as the caped crusader. Williams was charged with trespassing and possession of a dangerous weapon, but pleaded guilty to attempted resisting/obstructing an officer. He was sentenced to six-months of probation, which included banning Williams from dressing in any costumes.
Williams said he was inspired by others who dress as super heroes to prevent crime and reach out to the homeless. On Sept. 20 a post on Petoskey Batman's Facebook page indicated some frustrations with crime fighting.
"Sometimes i wished i didnt care about people so much or that i lived in a bigger city so i could concentrate on criminal activity."
Batman's partner in Petoskey crime-fighting is Batgirl. She also posted on her facebook page about the recent arrest and explains what she hopes to accomplish by joining forces with Batman.
"I am Petoskey's Batgirl. I am NOT a CRIME FIGHTER, I like to think of myself as a CRIME PREVENTER. I dont tolerate Domestic Violence of any kind."
